Saturday, 27 April 2013 12:00:00 EST
This year, Supply Resources was once again a superhero sponsor for the Annual Dan River Autism Awareness 5k. Over 900 people came out to support this cause, as they had something for everyone; Kids 1k, 5k run, and 5k walk. The competitors wore bibs holding electronic chips which timed each one individually from start to finish. The massive turn out was incredible to see and quite a statement about the people of our area. SRI was honored to be a part of such a wonderful event. Our team consisted of 4 competitors in the 5k Walk division, covering 3 age groups. ALL FOUR of our team placed in the top 2 of their group! We are so excited to finish so well among such great competition. We can't wait for next year and hope to see another record breaking turnout to support the Autism Education Fund.To find out more about this program, please visit http://danriverautism5k.org/ .

Friday, 11 January 2013 12:00:00 EST
Supply Resources is delighted to begin the New Year with an announcement of acquisition and expansion. We have recently acquired Lynchburg Public Warehouse in Lynchburg, VA; a forty year old company which operates three public warehouse buildings totaling 125,000 square feet. In addition to the current warehouse tenants, SRI will use the Lynchburg location as a base of operation to expand its packaging business to Lynchburg and Roanoke area customers. The acquisition further diversifies SRI, with regards to revenue and geography."The Lynchburg acquisition is a great compliment to our current 300,000 square feet operation in Danville, VA. Customers are responding to our ability to lease and manage space for their outside warehouse needs." In addition to the exciting news surrounding the new Lynchburg location, Supply Resources announces the opening of a new satellite operation in Shelbyville, TN, just south of Nashville. This location will open in April, 2013, as a dedicated facility to a major US consumer goods manufacturer. The Tennessee warehouse will stage a variety of packaging supplies for just-in-time daily deliveries."Our continued growth throughout a sustained economic downturn is extremely gratifying. We understand that all of our customers have choices when selecting vendors, and we are deeply grateful for the way in which the market has responded to our offering. We continue to apply a practical entrepreneurial spirit in developing solutions to our customer's supply chain and logistics needs."-Rick Barker

Supply Resources hosted our 2012 Appreciation Day at VIR with a hospitality tent during the American Le Mans Series Race. We value the partnerships that we enjoy throughout the year with our customers and our vendors. We can't thank you enough for your support and business.Racing began at 8am on September 15th, and lasted all day with a line up of various events. The main race started at 2:30 and was action packed in the hair pin turn that our tent overlooked. However, the race was only over-shadowed by the weather! We could not have ordered a more perfect day, sunny and warm, between 75 and 80 degrees. We are hopeful for the same weather next year!Inside the tent, we were bursting with great food and people. Between the morning omelets, lunchtime variety from bacon-wrapped scallops to chipotle pork tenderloin, and the sinful snacks in the afternoon, no one left hungry! It was the icing on the cake for an awesome day and we hope all of you who attended enjoyed it as much as we did.Thank you all for coming out and enjoying all the festivities with us. We could not have been more pleased with such a great turnout. Make sure you visit the gallery page to see pictures of the event. If you were not able to make it, we hope you can join us next year and experience it for yourself!Sincerely,The Supply Resources Team

Supply Resources president, Rick Barker, attended the 110th Canton Import Export Fair in Guongzhou, China. The trip supports SRI’s goal to further improve its sourcing capabilities throughout Asia. Increasingly, buyers look to SRI to source packaging and non-packaging products offshore. SRI can ship to its customers directly from offshore manufacturers, or stage inventory in its distribution center for subsequent deliveries per customer production requirements. Buyers can eliminate the risk associated with importing and enjoy the same confidence that SRI delivers with its domestic supply chain. SRI can oversee quality inspections of orders at offshore manufactures before the containers are loaded, thus reducing the surprises on arrival.

Sunday, 29 August 2010 12:00:00 EST
Starting a business is harder than it seems. In fact, the Small Business Association estimates that 80 percent of businesses close their doors within the first five years. But growing a business, or any type of organization, is equally tough. Many entrepreneurs agree that turning to the other industry professionals and specialists is an essential ingredient for long-term success. Rick Barker, founder of Danville, VA.-based Supply Resources Inc. (SRI), is one of those. SRI is an industrial and retail packaging company that also distributes facility supplies and recycles industrial papers and plastics. He turned to Southside Business Technology Center (SBTC)- a non-profit organization that was created in partnership with Virginia Tech in 2005 and funded, in part, with a five-year, $985,000, DRF grant has helped 165 entrepreneurs, non profits and economic development entities create and expand their business activities. In addition, SBTC has delivered 115 multi-phase business consulting projects and provided 28,596 consulting hours, according to Lascelles James, director of SBTC's Danville operations."We've successfully navigated our startup phase," said Barker, who expanded his company in 2010 with the purchase and remodeling of a 172,000 square-foot distribution center on RT. 86. Close to the Virginia / North Carolina border."SBTC offers a level of expertise we could not afford otherwise."SBTC provided an organizational analysis and suggested they hire additional employees. Now SBTC is developing a five-year strategic plan for Supply Resources to continue growth. Barker intends to implement 75 to 80 percent of their recommendations.Supply Resources started with only one employee and a narrow service area. Today, the company employs 25 people, most of who have been hired within the past year. The packaging company offers more than 10,000 custom products. Its distribution center services a 100-mile radius, but SRI is a regional company with clients all over the country, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic States.

Sunday, 04 July 2010 12:00:00 EST
Supply Resources Inc. opened its 172,000-square-foot regional distribution center at 1746 S. Main St. near the state line after closing on the building in February. The company had been using a 71,000-square-foot warehouse on Wilson Street."Even in a down economy SRI continues to grow," President Rick Barker said."As customers grow, we grow with them," added Kenny Scruggs, director of operations and logistics. The move comes five years after Rick Barker launched the custom packaging and logistics company. Before then, Barker spent 20 years in the packaging industry and built SRI on the premise of giving customers better service. His strategic plan involved being market competitive on price, making relationships sustainable and providing indispensable service."What we find most customers need is not a better price. They need a better process," Barker said. "We focus on developing a process that better manages a customer's business."SRI found its niche in handling everything from designing, manufacturing, storing and delivering boxes to employing associates on customer sites and even installing equipment. The new distribution center allows the company to excel in this niche. It gives SRI more storage space so that the company can deliver the product as the customer needs it."What we do better than anyone in the region is the just-in-time delivery," Barker said. This frees up the customers' space for their use, said Scruggs, who was formerly operations manager at eToys. Some customers may need temporary space, which they can lease. The location of the distribution center, right off U.S. 29, is easily accessible to trucks and customers, said Scruggs, who runs the facility.Barker grew the company in Danville because that's where he grew up. Yet, the Virginia location means the company can ship to more addresses UPS next day than anywhere in the country, he added. The company serves mostly Mid-Atlantic regional customers or others based on customer referral. SRI is also selective and targets customers in profitable industries that are less likely to migrate offshore in the future, Barker said. Now that the five-year startup phase is complete, SRI works with a consulting firm to essentially redesign the company, Barker said."Creating a business is a risky endeavor," he said. "Your future is not for sure."The next goal is to become a better employer. The company recently hired its 25th employee.SRI is already helping its customers in green initiatives. When SRI delivers a truck of packaging material, that then empty truck can take baled customer recyclables back to the mill.SRI changed box design to make boxes reusable several times before going back to the paper mill for recycling. The company replaced wood pallets with corrugated cardboard ones, which are easier to use and recycle."We're entrepreneurs," Barker said. "We'll build to suit a tenant or client. If the customer wants it, we will build it."
